Comparative analysis

Comparative analysis is a detailed process of comparison to determine whether or not an object depicted on imagery is the same as an object identified by an investigating or defence team. The list of items that can and have been compared is endless, but in the main, these types of comparison relate to identification. For example, items of clothing and/or footwear worn by a person on CCTV that correspond with items recovered from a suspect may add to facial comparison evidence. Generally such comparisons relate to the type and style of items.

There are however, occasions where unique or distinctive marks can be seen on imagery that may support the view that two items are one and the same, with a commensurately greater weight of evidence. It is often helpful make comparisons of size as well as appearance; all our experts are trained in photogrammetry to conduct such examinations.
