LGC Forensics - Project Register - FAQs

Return to the registration form

What is this Register and how will it be used?

The Project Register is a database of forensics specialists - from all kinds of disciplines and skills - that we can refer to when we need to put together teams in response to our customers' needs. When we get an enquiry from a customer, we will be able to see who has the right skills and experience to help us deliver the project, and we can then talk to you to establish whether you are interested in becoming involved.

Why should I put myself onto it?

The simplest answer is that there's nothing to lose by doing so. It only takes a few minutes, and there is no commitment on your part. It gives you the opportunity to be considered for some interesting and exciting projects, where you can put your skills and experience to full use. But if the nature or timing of the project does not suit you, you can simply say "thanks, but no thanks".

What sort of people are you looking for?

We are looking for experienced forensics professionals, who can work within the project parameters (e.g. time, cost, quality etc.) to deliver what our customers need. The projects could be in any of the forensics disciplines and could involve a range of roles, such as training, laboratory design, process optimisation, validation, accreditation etc. Clearly, we want people with the right aptitude to work empathetically with our customers. Good communication skills are essential, and in some situations an understanding of cultural differences may also be important. In general terms, we are most likely to need people with the experience and gravitas that usually only comes after a number of years in a particular area.

What sort of projects might be involved?

It is difficult to be specific or to predict what projects will arise. For example, it may be something as small as asking someone to work in one of our UK labs for a few weeks to validate a new method. Or it may be that an overseas government commissions us to set up a large DNA laboratory in their country, which may need a large team for several months.

Are these projects in the UK or overseas?

Again, it is impossible to predict. Clearly, the UK forensics market is going through a period of significant change and LGC is at the forefront of this. Inevitably, this will give rise to situations where we need extra resources to help us with a particular issue. Equally, the LGC Group has a presence throughout the world and we are increasingly being approached by overseas customers, who recognise the UK's prominent position in forensics science. We certainly expect to see a strong growth in non-UK projects in the future.

Do you only want UK-based people?

No, we are very interested in hearing from experienced forensics scientists from throughout the world, for the reasons just mentioned.

How much does this project work pay?

A suitable rate would be discussed with you, depending on various factors, such as the duration and type of the project. You can normally expect that we will cover any travel and subsistence costs, and we would arrange any other relevant aspects (e.g. visas, insurance etc.).

I've registered my details - what happens now?

That all depends what projects arise, or are in the pipeline. There is no way of knowing what types of project will occur, nor when, so it is possible that there may not be any opportunities straightaway. In some cases, we may suggest that we set up a meeting, so that we can get to know you better and understand first-hand what you can contribute. From time-to-time we may check with you that you are still interested and available.

My details or situation have changed - what should I do?

Simply email us and we will amend your details. Similarly, if you no longer wish to be on the Register, let us know and we will remove you from it.

I'm worried about data security - who will have access to my details?

All your details will be held securely and confidentially, in the same way as any job application or CV that you might have already sent us. The only people with access to your details will be our HR staff and senior managers who are assembling potential team members for a specific project. We will not disclose your details to anyone outside LGC.

I'm interested, but I'd like to talk to someone about this?

If you would like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact me - Hugh Taylor, Director of International Operations and Projects, hugh.taylor@lgcforensics.com or +44 (0)7770 888922. As I am often away from the UK, an email first to arrange a suitable time to talk may be a good idea.
